Flagstaff, Arizona is the perfect weekend destination for outdoor lovers. The Grand Canyon is only 2 hours away and will take a full day to fully appreciate. Hike the rim trail to Hermit's Overlook for an amazing and quiet view. The main crowd doesn't usually make it this far. A little more crowded, but still breathtaking view is available at the Watchtower. The view from the deck is a must for any photographer. Visit the Kolb Brothers studio for a look not only of the canyon, but how early explorers lived at the canyon.
Spend the night in Flagstaff at a very nice and very reasonably priced hotel, my favorite is the Comfort Inn just north of the freeway on the western end of town. Red Lobster, Olive Garden, and Chilli's are close by, but for a unique to Flagstaff experience go to Bunhuggers on old Route 66 at the eastern end of town. Great hamburgers reasonably priced.
After a good night's rest, head south on highway 89 through Oak Creek Canyon. A vertigo-inducing drive will take you to numerous spots for an easy hike along Oak Creek. My favorite is at Grasshopper Point. If you visit in the fall, you will be rewarded with some beautiful fall color. In the summertime, this is a favorite swimming spot.
Further south on 89, you will come to Sedona and probably plan some future weekend trips! |
